I recently visited the Hilton Cardiff for an overnight bed-and-breakfast stay to celebrate a double birthday – both my mother’s 88th and my own 62nd. Originally, we planned this stay for mum’s birthday, but a rebooking brought us here on my own birthday, making it a very special celebration for both of us.
From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed. The receptionist – a lovely, attentive French gentleman – made our check-in smooth and memorable with his friendliness and attention to detail. Our room on the fifth floor had a beautiful view overlooking Cardiff Museum, and the twin room setup with a shower was just right. Equipped with all the amenities you’d hope for (tea, coffee, biscuits, a kettle, ironing board, and the nicest Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries that smelled absolutely divine), it felt like a little haven.
One of the highlights was having access to the Executive Lounge. After an energetic day shopping (mum may be 88, but she can navigate the shops like someone a quarter of her age!), we took a break at M&S, where mum enjoyed a coffee and a cheese scone before we continued. Back at the hotel, we took a moment to unwind in the lounge. Mum had a coffee with a few canapés, while I enjoyed a glass of wine – the perfect prelude to our dinner at Graze.
Not being big eaters, we kept it light for dinner. Mum ordered the chicken lollipops, which she enjoyed as a main, while I opted for a sirloin steak. Though I ordered my steak blue, it came out well-done, which I mentioned to the waiter. Despite this minor slip-up, the steak was still delicious. Mum found room for dessert and ordered the crème brûlée, a sweet end to a wonderful evening.
Our room was blissfully quiet, and with such comfortable beds and pillows, we both slept soundly until 7 a.m. I’d initially planned to check out the recently refurbished gym and pool area in the morning, but an extra hour of sleep was too tempting, and I didn’t want to leave mum alone. The gym looked great from my quick peek – modern, spacious, with the latest Life Fitness gym equipment, and inviting for anyone looking to work out.
Breakfast was fantastic, with a wide range of options: hot food, cheeses and meats, cereals, and a selection of breads and pastries. We enjoyed sausages, bacon, and eggs – all served hot, which is a welcome change from the lukewarm breakfasts sometimes encountered at chain hotels.
After breakfast, we managed to squeeze in one last round of shopping before being picked up for our journey home. All in all, our stay at the Hilton Cardiff was an absolute pleasure – perfect for celebrating together in a lovely, well-catered environment. Highly recommended for anyone looking for comfort, convenience, and a touch of luxury in Cardiff!
