There’s something wonderfully restorative about stepping away from the desk for a working lunch – especially when the setting is as charming as The Rhoost on Rock Road. Nestled in the heart of the village, this independent gem – owned by Joanne (Jo) and Andrew Wain – has quickly built a reputation for its warm hospitality, relaxed elegance, and beautifully crafted, home-cooked dishes.
Taking full advantage of the glorious weather, I met with Suzanne Cumpston, Sales and Commercial Manager of Sam Smith Travel, for a catch-up that perfectly balanced business with pleasure. With sunlight streaming through and the promise of the garden just beyond, it felt like the ideal setting to pause, reconnect, and talk all things travel, hospitality, and life.
The Rhoost’s ethos, as reflected on its website, centres around creating a welcoming, community-driven space where quality ingredients and thoughtful cooking take centre stage – and it certainly delivers. We began with a perfectly cooked steak, served alongside braised cabbage and a rich peppercorn sauce that was full of depth and flavour. It was hearty, comforting, and exactly what you want from a relaxed countryside lunch.
Of course, no working lunch is complete without a little indulgence. We shared two desserts: a classic sticky toffee pudding with warm butterscotch sauce and ice cream, and a zesty lemon meringue cheesecake finished with raspberry coulis. Both were homemade and, quite simply, perfection. Paired with a well-earned glass of red, it felt like a true treat.
It was Suzanne’s first visit to The Rhoost, and it’s safe to say it won’t be her last – she’s already earmarked it as a wonderful spot for future client entertaining (as have I). The only downside? Time. With meetings calling us back, we reluctantly left, wishing we could have lingered longer in the sun-drenched garden.
Next time, we’ll stay for that extra glass.
