The clocks are about to go back, the windows are staying shut and the house is starting to smell of whatever was cooked last night. This is the point in the year when home fragrance stops being a nicety and starts being useful.

Airy Fragrances is a name worth knowing. The brand is based in the UK, draws on Japanese landscapes for its scents and has its diffusers made in Japan. The frosted glass flask they come in is the first thing you notice. It looks more like something from a design shop than a supermarket shelf, and it will sit happily on a bathroom ledge, a bookcase or a bedside table without shouting about it.

Two to try
Mystic Essence 空 is the bright one. White fig and lychee give it a fruity, green character, with cherry blossom and a little rosemary underneath. It is a good match for bedrooms and bathrooms, and for anyone who prefers fresh to spiced.

Forest Breath 森 goes the other way. Hinoki, the Japanese cypress, is at its heart, rounded out with clary sage, sandalwood and a touch of honey. It is calm and woody, and well suited to a living room or study as the evenings draw in.

The details
Both are £40 for 250ml and come with eight reeds. The brand says the formula is alcohol-free, vegan and cruelty-free, and that a bottle typically lasts between two and a half and six months. Refills are available. Find them at www.airyfragrances.com
