Our High Streets Need Your Support

, / 439

More than ever we need to support our small and independent businesses on our high street. They are the heart of the community and for many reasons they should be supported. They are the backbone of our local economy. Here are just some of the other reasons why you should shop locally.

They create jobs for local people.

They support Welsh entrepreneurs.

They offer a more enjoyable shopping experience by offering a better quality of service.

The shops are more creative, unique and diverse.

They help build community and community identity.

They invest more into local charities and the community.

They are better for the environment (they use less packaging, source more locally produced products thereby reducing their global footprint with less transportation costs and pollution and produce less waste to fill up landfills.

Also, by shopping locally we can do our bit in saving the environment by reduced car use, leading to less air pollution and cleaner communities.

Finally, it’s more fun! Shopping in your local high street or town centre is much more of an enjoyable experience than traipsing through a large shopping complex; you can bump into friends and family and you can interact more with the shop owners and staff members.

One of the high streets we are really looking forward to revisiting once this craziness is over is High Street in Barry. Holton Road is frankly a no-go area at the moment, at least until more investment is pumped into it, landlords lower their rents, and the Council do something about the business rates to allow more quality independent shops to move in now that the big boys are closing down.

Anyway, back to the High Street. There is a fantastic range of excellent businesses on this street. Just a few of our favourites are (in no particular order) Sarah’s Hair Salon, Knights Estate Agents, Budding Designs Flower Studio, Bryl’s Boutique, Jade Boutique, The Gallery Boutique, Homemade Wales, Miss Holmes, The Deli, Gifts and Design@99 and Annie and Lolo, Jewellers, Aspirations, Giggles, Dr. Bob’s Balloons, High Street Pharmacy and The Grind House to name a few.

We could spend a good morning or afternoon here popping in and out of the shops, then taking a well-earned rest over a cuppa at The Grind House.

Once lockdown is over it’ll be on your marks, get set and go!
